Spring 2009 - back at OSU

During spring quarter of my sophomore year I lived in a house on 16th and Waldeck (which is just off high street, next to Ohio State’s campus). In total there were eight of us living in the house! I had met one of the other students staying there on Semester at Sea, but the others were initially all strangers. It turned out great and we all got along – so much so that I decided to stay around for the following year too. The house was a dump, but it was cheap and in a great location. And on the plus side, when we threw a party we didn’t have to worry about trashing the place; it pretty much already was a mess!

I was glad that I had a guaranteed place to live for my junior year, especially as summer approached and I had other, more immediate things on my mind. I’m referring to what was to be my next trip: a one month language course at a German university during August 09. In addition I decided to travel for a month while I was there, two weeks before and two after the program.

Before heading to Germany I would start in Lisbon,
and then move on to Madrid and Barcelona

After arriving in London on a morning in mid July I took a flight later that evening to Lisbon, Portugal. From Lisbon my plan was to go to Madrid, Barcelona, Nice, and Berlin before heading to the University of Bonn. Since I would be constantly on the move I decided to carry a large backpack instead of using traditional luggage. Before leaving I got my eurorail pass and booked hostels in Lisbon and Madrid, but I left my plans open after that in case I wanted to change my route. So less than four months after coming back from Quito I was back at it again, ready to complete the study abroad trifecta. More on that to come!

Dining in Japan: Foodgasams Galore

Andrew is much more of a foodie than I am, in the sense that he likes to plan out his meals and document them.  As for me, I certainly enjoy food and trying new dishes, but I'm often content with eating whatever I happen to stumble upon when hunger strikes.  Of all the things about Japan that Andrew was looking forward to, food topped the list.  Predictably I was less enthusiastic (that's not to say I wasn't excited about it though). The Town of Norseman, Australia

In the end I worked in town of Norseman, Western Australia for five months.  Luckily I had enough hours on the job to keep me occupied because there wasn't much else to do in town. My first thought upon learning about Norseman was, why the name?  There are a ton of odd town names in Australia - Toowoomba, Wagga Wagga, Woolloomooloo, Maroochydore - but most of them have Aboriginal origins.  Norseman, as I soon learned, was the name of Lawrence Sinclair's horse.  In 1894 Sinclair stumbled upon gold in the area.  As legend has it, his horse kicked up a gold nugget with its hoof.  A gold rush was already on around Kalgoorlie, and prospectors soon flooded into the area seeking riches (the wiki page has a short blurb about the town). on the edge of nowhere: Norseman, WA Norseman, the eponymous horse whose owner founded the town. The Beautiful Scenery and Distinctive Culture of Samosir

After spending two nights and only one full day in Berastagi I was set to move on to Lake Toba.  More specifically I was headed to Samosir, the island within Lake Toba.  Samosir, the largest island within an island in the world (within the island of Sumatra), is nearly the size of Singapore!  The island is a popular destination for both international and Indonesian tourists looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of Indonesian cities.  The views are hard to beat too!
